Large Format & UV Printing
Large format printing is what a business reaches for when the message has to be bigger than a sheet of paper: a banner across a storefront, a printed panel on a wall, a full building wrap during a remodel, a rigid sign that has to survive outdoors for years. The guides in this topic cover the three production routes SignWorks uses — printed vinyl banners, direct UV printing onto rigid board, and aluminium composite (ACM) panels — and, more usefully, when each one is the wrong choice.
The decision is almost always about substrate and lifespan rather than about the print itself. A vinyl banner is the cheapest way to say something loudly for a season, and it is not meant to be a permanent sign. PVC board prints beautifully and belongs indoors or in shade. ACM — aluminium skins over a plastic core — does not rust, warp or swell, which is why it ends up on facades, monument signs and backing panels behind illuminated letters. Direct UV printing bonds the ink to the panel instead of sticking a printed film on top of it, so nothing can peel or bubble at the edges.
For a business in Guanacaste, the sun and the salt do the deciding. A panel that is fine inland can chalk and fade on a beachfront wall in a couple of seasons. These articles go through thicknesses, finishes, realistic outdoor lifespans and what large format work actually costs here, so you can specify a job rather than accept whatever a print shop quotes.
